Understand, O dullest of the people!
Psalm 94:8-11
Fools, when will you be wise?
He who planted the ear, does he not hear?
He who formed the eye, does he not see?
He who disciplines the nations, does he not rebuke?
He who teaches man knowledge—
the Lord—knows the thoughts of man,
that they are but a breath.
The opening verses of the psalm cry out to the LORD to “repay the proud”. It is a lament of an oppressed people seeking justice from their oppressors. The section ends with a quoted denial of the oppressors that God takes notice of their evil deeds.
But as we see in the above verses – that is wrong and dangerous thinking.
These verses remind us that God is aware of all things, at all times, and in all circumstances. He even knows the deepest thoughts of man. These words are addressed toward those who reject him – the evil oppressors of verses 1-7, but they are also a great reminder for those of us who are believers. It should humble us and encourage us at the same time.
It should humble us because if He knows everything – that means everything about us – our thoughts, our deeds, our sins, and our disobedience. Nothing is hidden from the Lord. But it is also encouraging, because if He does know everything – which He does – then we know He has a purpose and a plan that involves all things. Meaning nothing happens by chance, and nothing happens for no reason. And if we trust in the sovereignty and perfect justice of God – which we must – then we can rest knowing that His justice will be served – and for us it has been served on Christ. We need not fear those who oppose us and hate us for our faith in Christ. We need not fear anything in this life because we know the God who knows all things is using it for His glory and our good. The two cannot happen apart from each other.
Sola Deo Gloria.
