Fret not yourself because of evildoers;
be not envious of wrongdoers!
For they will soon fade like the grass
and wither like the green herb.Trust in the Lord, and do good;
dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act.
He will bring forth your righteousness as the light,
and your justice as the noonday.Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;
fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way,
over the man who carries out evil devices!Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!
Psalm 37:1-8
Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.
Fret not.
Trust in the Lord.
Do good.
Delight yourself in the LORD.
Commit your way to the LORD.
Be still before the LORD.
Wait patiently for Him.
Fret not.
How different would it be if these things were our focus as we went through the day? If rather than fretting over the evil we see in the world, what if we trusted in the LORD? If rather than fretting over what we don’t have, what if we trained ourselves to delight in the LORD? If rather than fretting over what we think we should be or should not be doing, what if we committed our way to the LORD? If rather than fretting at all, what if we were still and waited patiently for the LORD?
Simple concepts but challenging to live out.
Diligence. Vigilance. Intentionality.
We must diligently control and redirect our thoughts to what is True. We must be vigilant over our hearts and minds and what we allow to take root. We must be intentional in our seeking of wisdom through the Word of God. Too often when we feel the weight of worry or anxiety and are prone to “fretting ourselves”, we think we have no choice but to think the thoughts. But in Christ, we have been given the strength to take every thought captive. Again, a simple concept that is challenging to live out. But that is the Christian life. Thanks be to God, that by his grace and “divine power He has granted us all things that pertain to life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3). We simply need to walk in it.
Sola Deo Gloria!
