I’ll be perfectly honest – these chapters in 1 Chronicles are not easy to read. I have been using the Bible app on my phone to read the passages as I follow along. It prevents my stumbling over all the names. I have to remind myself with passages like these would have made sense to the original audience of Israel. So, as always, there is purpose in every word and syllable of Scripture. So, we read it because we don’t cherry-pick what we like and don’t like. But I am thankful that the dude on the Bible app can pronounce these names!
God’s sovereignty. We’ve discussed it many, many times over the last few months as we read through the Old Testament. Psalm 93 brings us back to this truth. In this short psalm, we see that the LORD reigns, he is majestic, his throne is established (secure), he is from everlasting verses 1 and 2), he is mighty (verse 4), and he is trustworthy (verse 5).
This is a psalm of praise – acknowledging that God is the King over all of creation. And as King, he rules and ordains all things in His creation. Understanding (as much as my finite mind can) the character of God in his holiness, perfection, justice, grace, mercy, faithfulness, and love, in connection with his absolute sovereignty, is a source of great comfort and peace. Especially with the world we find ourselves sojourning through as believers. It is why God is a refuge and shelter for us. We must continually come back to what we know to be true about the God we serve when times around us are raging. We can’t make sense of it. But we can find refuge and strength in the shelter of the One who is in control. I need that reminder every single day.
