So teach us to number our days
that we may get a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12
This psalm, written by Moses, reminds us of God’s eternity and our mortality. He has ordained the number of our days, because he created us, knows us, and sustains us. How would our lives be different if we knew the number of our days? Would we live with more intentionality? Would we be more apt to live differently in light of it? I think we would. Even though we don’t and can’t know the exact number of days we will have in this life, we do know there are only so many of them. Knowing this should cause us to reflect on how we are spending our days, our hours, our moments, our seconds…and our greatest desire in light of this should be to grow in our wisdom and knowledge of the Lord. Our greatest goal should be to live in a manner worthy of the calling to which he has called us. Being reminded that there is an end date on the horizon should cause us to want to live in such a way that we pour ourselves out completely for the glory of the Lord. And we are able to do this because the God who saved us is eternal, and he is our dwelling place forever.
We can trust him to provide for us and sustain us for the exact number of days he has given us. We don’t need to hold back – we can’t hold back.
I don’t want to hold back anymore.
How about you?
