But I will sing of your strength;
Psalm 59:16-17
I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning.
For you have been to me a fortress
and a refuge in the day of my distress.
17 O my Strength, I will sing praises to you,
for you, O God, are my fortress,
the God who shows me steadfast love.
David was being pursued by Saul who wanted him dead. And as we see in today’s chapters of 1 Samuel, Saul is consumed by his jealousy of David and relentless in his pursuit. It appears as there will be no rest for David.
But what we see in the midst of this are the verses above. Though David decries the heaviness of his situation, he ends the psalm by returning to what he knows to be true about the LORD. He trusts the LORD to protect and sustain him through this trial. This trust extends beyond just the current circumstances he finds himself in. He trusts in God’s ultimate justice on those who persecute him.
We would do well to follow David’s example in times of trials and hardships. No matter what the circumstances we find ourselves in – God is in control and has a purpose. He WILL be glorified – which always means our ultimate good. And while we may lament the pain and difficulty of our trials, we must always come back to focus our hearts on what is TRUE. These verses are good ones to commit to our hearts and memorize for the day(s) ahead when we will need them.
