But you, O God my Lord,
Psalm 109:21
deal on my behalf for your name’s sake;
because your steadfast love is good, deliver me!
False accusations and persecution are the laments laid out in the opening verses of Psalm 109. The psalmist then goes on to appeal to the Lord for justice and judgment upon those who have caused his suffering.
Once again, we see the psalmist circle back around to acknowledge his reliance upon the Lord, not only for the justice which he longs for but also to sustain him while he endures. He trusts that because of the steadfast love of the Lord, he will be delivered from his suffering – whether in this life or in eternity. And we see the psalm end in praise and thanksgiving which reflects the confidence of the psalmist.
Amid hard times, I have been guilty of getting no further than laying out my complaint and pain before the Lord – stopping short and not going into the praise and thanksgiving part. This is a conviction in my heart. God knows the pain and hardship we endure – He himself became man and suffered too. Whatever circumstances we find ourselves in may we grow in the faith that will allow us to see past the suffering and remember that He is the One who will sustain us to endure. May that truth draw our hearts to praise and thanksgiving even while we do endure.
Sola Deo Gloria.
