The seer, Balaam, was summoned by Balak of Moab to curse the nation of Israel. In today’s reading, we see, once again, that no one (read: NO ONE) can thwart the plans of God. Even this pagan, greedy seer could not pronounce a judgment upon the people of God – because the Lord put words into his mouth. He had no choice but to speak them.
We saw an example of this in Job in the first couple of chapters. Satan was only allowed to do to Job what God had said he could do – he could go no further. In the same respect, because God had chosen Israel as his people, blessed them, and promised them an inheritance, there were no other options for Balaam except to issue a blessing instead of cursing.
It brings back the words of Job 42:
I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
Job 42:1
