Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night.He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
Psalm 1
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.
This psalm is the whole basis for this blog.
A tree planted by streams of water will have deep, strong roots. Those roots give the tree not only stability and strength, but also causes the tree to be healthy and fruitful.
A woman who is rooted in the Word of God will also have stability and strength and she will be spiritually healthy and fruitful for the Kingdom of God. Why? Because she is not rooted in the shallow, loose soil of the world around her – approval of man, worldly possessions, idolatry of self – but she is deeply rooted in the truth of Scripture, and her life is centered on Christ. She refuses to follow the ways of the world around her. Like the tree in this psalm, her roots are firmly planted and well-watered by the grace of Christ in her life.
She meditates on the Word. This isn’t some yoga posing, “Ohm” chanting meditation. This is the prayerful pondering and thinking upon Scripture. It is thinking about the things that Paul tells us in Philippians 4:
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
Philippians 4:8
This woman is stable, productive, consistent and the Lord prospers all that she does. Her joy is rooted in her obedience to Christ. Her mind is set on things above, not on things below.
THAT is the woman I desire to be. The reading of this psalm today was very timely for me. I needed to be brought back to this and to be reminded of these things. When I started this blog I had all sorts of ideas and plans – none of which have really come to fruition. But I have come to realize it has been purposeful, and am prayerfully thinking about where to take things from here.
