For a day in your courts is better
Psalm 84:10-12
than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of wickedness.
For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
the Lord bestows favor and honor.
No good thing does he withhold
from those who walk uprightly.
O Lord of hosts,
blessed is the one who trusts in you!
In these verses, we see the heart’s desire of one who fully trusts in the Lord. This person would rather have one day in the presence of God and hold a lowly position there than spend a thousand years or dwell elsewhere. Nothing in this world is more important or precious than being in the presence of God. They view God as their light of life and their protection. This person understands that trust in and obedience to Him results in blessing.
Earlier in this same psalm, the psalmist writes:
My soul longs, yes, faints
Psalm 84:2
for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and flesh sing for joy
to the living God.
It is quite convicting, isn’t it? It causes me to question myself – do I love and pursue the Lord this way? Is dwelling in his presence – moment by moment, day by day – so precious to me that I can’t imagine anything else? Do I long to be with him?
Or do I allow myself to be distracted and drawn away by a million other cares and concerns?
