How To Delight in God’s Word When You Don’t Feel Like It

Life can be challenging in many ways. Our days are full — caring for family, raising children, marriage, work, and responsibilities both inside and outside the home. We live in a world overflowing with distraction: chaos in the world, constant noise, social media. And if we are honest, we also struggle with misplaced priorities — failing to put first things first.

I see these things often come to fruition among women when it comes to being in God’s Word on a regular (read: daily!) basis. I often hear:

  • “I am just so busy I can’t find the time.”
  • “I’m so tired I can’t concentrate.”
  • “I don’t know where to start, so I don’t.”

But here’s the truth: we make time for what matters to us. Our schedules and our priorities reveal what we love.

Have you ever heard someone say, “I’m so busy I just can’t find time to scroll through reels”?

Be honest. That pinches a little, doesn’t it?

Hear me when I say this – I deeply desire for you to be a woman of the Word. A woman who delights in the law of the Lord (Psalm 1:2). A woman who stores up the Word in her heart (Psalm 119:11). A woman who turns her eyes from looking at worthless things and finds life in the Word of God (Psalm 119:37). A woman who fully embraces the teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness that the Word provides, so that she is equipped for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16–17).

The struggle is real, and you are not alone in it — but we must be careful not to excuse what God, in His grace, calls us to address.
But this isn’t ultimately about me. And it isn’t about you.

It is about Him.

You were saved by grace to bring glory and honor to the Lord. How do we do that if we never pick up the Book that tells us who He is? How do we walk in love and obedience — growing in awe, wonder, and reverence for Him — if we do not spend time marinating in the truths of Scripture?

So how do we delight in God’s Word when we don’t feel like it? How do we discipline ourselves in the daily intake of Scripture? How do we prioritize the things of the Lord every single day?

Thankfully — Scripture doesn’t leave us without direction.

First — we pray.

We must surrender ourselves to the Lord each and every day. Asking Him for the desire and discipline to seek Him through His Word is good and right — especially when we’re lacking those things. Does this mean He will answer that prayer by knocking our socks off every time we read? Not necessarily. But if we continually pour out our hearts to Him — confessing our desire to know Him more — He will strengthen us to walk in obedience and build that discipline.
Pray. Pray. Pray. (Psalm 119:18)

Second — we plan.

Ever heard the saying, “Failing to plan is planning to fail?” When we approach the Word of God, we must do so with intentionality.

Nothing frustrates me more than the cherry-picking reader. Opening the Bible at random and going “wherever your heart leads you” can be dangerous, because we so often chase an emotional high we wrongly equate with God at work. Ladies, can we let that go?

We must read Scripture in context and stop chasing verses that stir emotion. Emotions aren’t bad, but they aren’t the goal. The goal is to know Him — to gain wisdom and understanding. Find a Bible reading plan that takes you through Scripture over time. Or simply choose a book (the Gospels are a great place to start) and commit to a chapter a day. Build that muscle of discipline!

Third — we prioritize.

We’ve prayed. We’ve made a plan. Now we must make it a priority.
What we prioritize is what we will spend our time doing. What is keeping you from being in the Word? Not enough time? Then where is your time going?
We all have responsibilities — home, work, laundry, kids, meals — but we also know we don’t spend our entire day consumed with tasks. So what are you willing to let go of to prioritize time with your Creator? Getting up earlier? Going to bed later? Removing social media? Putting your phone in another room? Using nap time for something other than busywork?
That may sound harsh, but far too often we’re resistant to being honest about how much time we waste. I struggle with this too. But the Word of God must be a priority.
Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

Fourth — we practice.

What does that mean? It means just doing it.
We pray, plan, prioritize — and then we do it. And we do it again, and again, and again. Rinse and repeat.

This is how discipline is created in our lives. Not as a checklist, but as a faithful rhythm of obedience. We practice obedience until it becomes second nature.
Train yourself for godliness (1 Timothy 4:7b).

Lastly — we ponder.

Another word is “meditate,” but I have a whole thing going with the P’s.

One way to do this is to keep a simple journal with your Bible. It doesn’t have to be fancy. Write down verses that stand out, words to look up, things to memorize, or prayers that come to mind. Meditating on the Word is how the Spirit uses it to transform and renew our minds.

Remember Psalm 1?
“His delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night.”
What is the result?
“He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does he prospers.”

When we delight in the Word — when we soak in it, pray through it, think deeply on it — we become like that tree: healthy, nourished, fruitful, steadfast. Not withering away. Prosperous in the ways that matter.

(Side note — that doesn’t mean easy, comfortable, or wealthy. More on that later.)

So let’s recap:

How do we find delight in the Word of God even when we don’t feel like it?

  • Pray.
  • Plan.
  • Prioritize.
  • Practice.
  • Ponder.

It is not “one and done” — not to earn God’s favor, but because we have been given it. It is daily surrender, confessing our need, and choosing to walk in a manner worthy of the calling He has given us.

Today is the day — don’t wait.
