Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
Psalm 20:7-8
but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
8 They collapse and fall,
but we rise and stand upright.
According to the ESV Study Notes on Psalm 20, it is considered a Royal Psalm, and “is a prayer that God will give success to the Davidic king, particularly in battle.” The first five verses of the psalm speak to the king, and beginning in verse 6, they speak about the king.
The trust of the psalmist ultimately is in the Lord alone. While chariots and horses were necessary to fight the battles ahead of them, the victory belonged to the Lord. The Lord provided what was needed to do battle, and the results of that battle belonged to Him and Him alone.
While we are not Israel, and we are not fighting battles with chariots and horses – it is a great reminder not to put our trust in the things of this world. The Lord provides all that we need to live in the way He calls us to live – obedience is ours, and the results are God’s.
